Shining a Light on Black Dog Syndrome

In shelters across the country, black dogs face a heartbreaking reality. They are the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized. It isn't because of their behavior, breed or health. It is an unconscious bias known as Black Dog Syndrome.

The Black Dog Syndrome Alliance unites shelters and advocates to bring this issue out of the shadows. We provide the tools to change perceptions, highlight the beauty of black dogs and ensure every animal gets the fair chance at a forever home they deserve.

What is Black Dog Syndrome?

Black Dog Syndrome is the phenomenon where black-coated dogs are disproportionately overlooked in favor of lighter-colored dogs. This leads to longer wait times for adoption and significantly higher euthanasia rates.

It is not based on temperament or health. It is an unconscious bias rooted in visual challenges—black dogs are harder to photograph and harder to see inside dimly lit kennels—and outdated misconceptions.

What Are Common Misconceptions About Black Dogs?

"They're Mean/Aggressive"

Absolutely false. Coat color has no correlation with temperament. Black dogs are just as loving, playful and gentle as any other dog.

"They're Generic"

While their coats may look uniform, every black dog has a unique spirit. They are only "invisible" until you take a closer look.

"They're Bad Luck"

This is an old superstition with no basis in reality. In fact, adopting a dog whose life depends on it is the best luck of all.

Is Black Dog Syndrome real?

Yes. According to this study by The George Washington University “Black Dog Syndrome” is a term used to describe the phenomenon in American animal shelters where large black dogs are adopted less frequently and euthanized more often than dogs of other colors and sizes, regardless of their temperament or health.

Why Does The Black Dog Syndrome Alliance Exist?

The Black Dog Syndrome Alliance was formed to shine a light on Black Dog Syndrome. We want to empower other organizations with the tools needed to get these wonderful dogs adopted into loving homes. We believe collective action can reduce biases toward black dogs and help educate dog lovers (and everyone) for the better.

Who Can Join & How Does It Work?
